Refrigerants – Uncertainty regarding auto air conditioning
Two years ago, a new refrigerant, as the currently used is environmentally harmful. There are two new solutions already exist, but nobody knows which funds will be used now.
Some time ago, experts have recognized that the agent in car air-conditioning is environmentally harmful. So it was decided that another was needed – by the year 2011. What is in it as well – which refrigerant will continue to be found in air conditioning is not fixed yet.

An alternative was found quickly, even as manufacturers’ association VDA, the new solution was in order – it was said at any rate at the time in 2007. Now, however, is 2011 not far to drive but instead found the solution, everything changed. For now another alternative on the table. Although a new tool in a good year to be used, no one really knows now what will it be.
In the air-conditioning systems of cars, a refrigerant called R134a is used. This means, however, has a global warming potential that is 1,300 times as high as that of carbon dioxide (CO2). Each car comes with R134a, therefore, according to the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) in Dessau from unavoidable leaks in the system per kilometer ride seven grams of CO2 addition. In Germany alone, 2006, about 2,300 tons came from R134a air conditioning systems of cars in the atmosphere.
European directive sets the tone
Experts was therefore long been clear that had to be made for replacement. And so it came to a European directive known as 2006/40/EC. It states that from 1 January 2011, only new passenger car models may be authorized to release their air conditioners a lot less unpleasant substances into the environment. In plain text may continue a certain amount of refrigerant in the plant more than 150 times its climate-damaging than the same amount of CO2.
The solution that was found was, at first somewhat surprising: CO2. For, while CO2 emissions in terms of the exhaust gases of a car as something is, the rate must be lowered, it has clear advantages in terms of air conditioning. What comes out of an air conditioning system in terms of environmental impact is called the global warming potential. The three letters are an abbreviation of “Global Warming Potential” and describe the risk of the product in terms of global warming: While R134a has a GWP of 1300, lies in the cold technically called CO2 R744 just at 1 Because of this, it seemed like the decision – and several producers commented on the development of appropriate car air conditioners.
Further refrigerant in an interview
Unexpectedly brought companies such as Honeywell then another refrigerant into the conversation. It is called HFO 1234yf from the perspective of manufacturers and has the advantage that it can also be used in the already existing air conditioning systems – however, needs new CO2 air conditioning systems.
There are at HFO 1234yf but also one major drawback: it is considered to be combustible, may, according to EPA to “make a fire highly corrosive hydrofluoric acid.” Although time is running until January 2011, is the bottom line but everything is open again. “The changes will come in 2011, but is still unclear which refrigerant will be used,” says Wolfgang Plehn of UBA.
The refusal decision could have consequences if it is actually far. The problem: “The industry should now already in its manufacturing facilities for the future air conditioning units,” said Gerd Lottsiepen, transport policy spokesman of the Transport Club Germany (VCD) in Berlin.
While the final decision still a ways off, for example, drops Honeywell stone unturned to make HFO-added 1234yf harmless. It is repeatedly referred to flammability of the composition, it is “10 000 times more likely that a person is struck by lightning than to be injured by a HFO 1234yf inflammation due to a crash.”
To Wolfgang Plehn it is unclear what such calculations are based on. The EPA is rather with the statement that the agent is flammable and that just may make the dangerous hydrofluoric acid. This in turn can lead to severe burns to skin and respiratory tract. “For the EPA, CO2 is an environmentally friendly alternative,” said Plehn. Which choice is the manufacturer make, must be seen.
